If you want to understand the most fundamental problem facing today’s Democratic Party, don’t start with a platform (is there one? Anyway, that’s for another post). Start with the blatantly obvious issue here: ego.
Democrats love to talk about themselves. Their moral superiority. Their “historic firsts.” Their personal narratives.
But in that pursuit of approval from the liberal media and talking heads, Democrats lost their identity and gave up leadership in the name of power. They’ve made holding personal power, not power for their party or their platform, their focus. And that ego-driven political priority has cost them everything from credibility to elections.
Just look at Karine Jean-Pierre. Her new book, and what may be the most disastrous media tour surrounding it, has been about her personal grievances. For a book supposedly about how the Democratic Party is broken, the “broken parts” she rails against are the same ones that gave her and Joe Biden power and influence.
If you haven’t read the The Washington Post review, you should. It’s scathing. And it underscores the larger issue: Democrats have built an entire party around airing grievances. It’s like a never-ending Seinfeld Festivus where they’ve got a lot of problems with you people, and now you’re gonna hear about it.
There are plenty of examples of the Democratic ego on display, but let’s start with an easy one…
Democrats have a core belief that politics comes above everything else. It’s why Nancy Pelosi once shrugged off concerns about transparency by saying, “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it,” and why Rahm Emanuel said Democrats should “never let a good crisis go to waste.” The goal is always politics first, policy second and that’s exactly what we’re seeing right now.
This government shutdown was done by Democrats, and it can end when Democrats vote to reopen the government.
There’s an opportunity for political calculus here in some competitive 2025 races that isn’t being considered. I’m not saying it’s the only reason for the shutdown but it’s a reason that certainly can be in the back or front of elected officials’ minds. Democrats have put forward a laundry list worth over a trillion dollars to reopen government, including healthcare for illegal immigrants (go ahead and make that make sense when Americans are missing paychecks with this shutdown – Democrats pick illegals over Americans but that’s for another day).
In Virginia, the stakes are pretty big. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees and contractors are going without paychecks and there’s an election in November. Polls are showing tightening races across the board, and with Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones exposed for sending the most hateful and grotesque text messages imaginable about murdering a political rival and his children, the landscape is even more volatile.
Progressive staffers sent a letter demanding a 32 hour work week. Erin Maguire joins HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher to talk about the absurdity of such an ask and why working on Capitol Hill was her greatest career and if you can't enjoy the privilege of the job -- you don't deserve it.
Erin Maguire joined Amazon Prime's Election Night in America hosted by Brian Williams to discuss the way Republicans talk to women about their healthcare and the work we need to do to be better.
